Do you need a visa for Europe?

One question. Pick the passport you will travel on and the answer comes straight from the regulation that decides it.

What this covers

Short stays in the Schengen area for tourism and similar purposes, up to 90 days in any 180 day period. It does not cover work, study, residence or any stay longer than that. Those run on different rules and this tool says nothing about them.

Which countries the Schengen area covers

The Schengen area is 29 countries: 25 European Union members plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Czechia
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Iceland
  • Norway
  • Switzerland
  • Liechtenstein

Two countries people expect to find here are not on that list. Ireland has opted out and runs its own visa and border rules. Cyprus takes part in Schengen cooperation, but the Council has not yet lifted its internal border controls.

Where this comes from, and what it cannot tell you

Every answer above is read from Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, the regulation listing the countries whose nationals need a visa for a short stay and the countries whose nationals do not. The version used is the Consolidated text 32018R1806 EN, 30 December 2025, and Durian last checked it against EUR-Lex on 12 September 2026. Read the consolidated regulation on EUR-Lex →

Nationals of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland are in neither annex. They appear here under free movement rules rather than under Regulation (EU) 2018/1806.

What it cannot tell you. Whether a visa is required is only the first question. It does not tell you what a consulate will ask you for, how long anything takes, or what any application will cost. It says nothing about work, study, residence or long stays. Border rules change, so check the official source for your destination before you rely on any of it. If the regulation and this page ever disagree, the regulation is right and we want to know.
